Betsey Johnson once said, “Making clothes involves what I like… color, pattern, shape and movement… I like the everyday process…the people, the pressure, the surprise of seeing the work come alive walking and dancing around on strangers. Like red lipstick on the mouth, my products wake up and brighten and bring the wearer to life… drawing attention to her beauty and specialness… her moods and movements… her dreams and fantasies.”
I have been a fan of Betsey Johnson’s creations and what she embodies for years, her clothes are unique, and she is unique. Her style is like no one else; she often jumps, screams, uses profanity and leaps into somersaults all at a moment’s notice. She seems to embrace life and all of its beauty, never fearful of going against the norm. She seems to enjoy her work and her life and she inspires me in many ways. Her clothes and jewelry make me smile simply by seeing them; I look forward to wearing what I own of hers when I can.
As a photographer, I carry my Nikon more than I carry a purse. I enjoy capturing candid moments. My mother invited me to accompany her on a trip to a local Dillard’s store to catch a glimpse of Betsey Johnson as she was going to be in town; naturally my Nikon was with us. The store was full of fans leading halfway down the mall. Almost everyone there was showing off their Betsey wears, including us. It was a fun day and I was especially happy to share it all with my mother.
I am not profiting from any of these images, I am simply a fan sharing one of my inspirations with you.
Betsey’s reaction to the huge crowd.
My favorite capture of her. I LOVE that laugh.
A model wearing one of my favorite necklaces.
Almost in tears because of the size of the crowd.
Another model wearing earrings and a scarf that I now own.
As a photographer I try to capture genuine moments, as Betsey said: “Like red lipstick on the mouth, my products wake up and brighten and bring the wearer to life… drawing attention to her beauty and specialness… her moods and movements… her dreams and fantasies.”
Each of us are beautiful and special in our way, we each have our own dreams and fantasies, and my dream is to help draw attention to the beauty in life for the people in my photographs, like red lipstick to the mouth.
